Antique Chalice of Solid Silver Gilt. France, Circa 1900

Stylized and beautiful gold-plated solid-silver chalice, accompanied by a paten and in its original storing case. This item was made in France circa 1900 and remains in very good condition. The chalice bears the hallmark of the goldsmiths Berger & Nesme and the mark of the French silver, being an original high-quality piece. It is decorated with hand-engraved motifs, simple and elegant: together with its airy design, this decoration turns this chalice into a wonderful piece that will shine in any collection or showcase. The chalices foot is circular in shape and creates a conical-shaped part. At the edge we can see the mentioned hallmarks: the goldsmiths mark is a lozenge containing a chalice between the letters B and N. The name Berger & Nesme corresponds to Charles-Frédéric Berger and Henri Nesme, silversmiths manufacturers of church silver and tableware. The workshop was located at the 122 rue Saint-Georges, Lyon (France); it was active between 1897 and 1910. The foots surface is embellished with embossed crosses surrounded by engraved lines that create flowers, beams and leaves. Over the foot, the node is adorned with the same motifs. The cups decoration is similar to the one that we can appreciate in the foot and the node, composed of embossed and engraved motifs. In this case, instead of crosses we can see stylized flowers with long stems under gothic arches. By the cups edge we can see the same hallmarks located at the foot. The chalice is accompanied by a simple silver paten, with no hallmarks or decoration at all. The whole set can be stored in the original case, somewhat worn outside but perfect to protect and carry the chalice.
