Astonishing antique gilt solid silver chalice nearly 200 years old in excellent condition. The chalice comes from France and is dated between 1818 and 1838. It is a big-sized piece (12 inches high) and comes in an antique storing case made after the 19th century. The gilt finish that covers the piece is in perfect condition, providing the embossed motifs that adorn its surface with a warm beautiful golden shade. The chalice comes with a paten, also made of gilt silver and with hand-engraved decoration. Both pieces bear hallmarks that guarantee their ancient age and quality. The chalices foot is circular in shape and is covered of engraved and embossed motifs, just like the rest of the piece. Over a fine border with flowers and reeds (symbols of the Christian community) we can see three medallions with images of the Crucifixion. One of them depicts Jesus with the mantle and the crown of thorns in the moment when Roman soldiers dress him up as the King of the Jews. Other image shows Peter the apostle (with his iconic keys) denying Jesus just before cockcrowing. The last one shows the Crucified Christ. The images are carefully engraved and make up a wonderful decoration. Over the foot, the stem has a big-shaped decorated node with engravings depicting wheat stalks, grape bunches on the vine and reeds, all of them classic Christian symbols. Over the node stands the gorgeous stylized cup, decorated with three female figures. These figures symbolize the three Theological Virtues: the Faith (with the chalice and a hand on her chest), the Hope (with an anchor) and the Charity (with two kids). Between the images we can see again the stated Christian symbols. As for the paten, this piece bears an engraved image of the crown of thorns and the Latin acronym for Jesus Christ, IHS. The storing case is a sturdy black-leather-covered suitcase with brass handle and locks, inside covered of well-preserved red velvet. At the base, in the inner part, there is a dedication in French: "Ce calice apartient a M. Grandjean curé de Genevrieres", which translated comes to say: "This chalice belongs to Mr. Grandjean, priest of Genevrieres." Rarely do we have a chalice with some history. In this case we know that in his time it belonged to the priest of Genevrieres, a small town in the region of Champagne-Ardennes. Perhaps he was the original owner of the chalice. This fine antique gilt solid silver chalice is a superb piece which preserves its attractive and spiritual feel intact. Measurements: Chalice: Foots Width: 6.2 in / 15.5 cm.
