Antique gold-plated solid silver ciborium coming from France, where it was manufactured circa 1860. The foot is gilt metal. The cup and lid are solid silver. This striking silversmiths work is more than one hundred and fifty years old and is greatly preserved. The amazing handmade embossed and engraved decoration that covers the silver surface includes symbols of the Eucharist and images of the Holy Family. The ciborium bears hallmarks that belong to the French silversmith Hippolyte Puche. Puche lived and worked in France since 1847 and this superb ciborium is a good example of his gorgeous quality pieces. The ciborium boasts a balanced and elegant design that combines the gold-plated finish with lean silver. Curiously, the lid is connected to the cups edge by a welded hinge, a rare feature in these items. The base is circular and simple, decorated with embossed images depicting couples of cherubs heads. Between them we can see wheat stalks and bunches of grapes, symbols of the Eucharistic bread and wine (Christs Body and Blood). There are also images of reeds, a plant that symbolizes the People of God. Over the base, a stylized node shows off more images of the Eucharistic symbols. At the top of the ciborium, the lower part of the cup is decorated with a lovely engraved decoration containing different motifs. As well as the reeds, the grapes and the stalks we can see three medals with portraits of Jesus, Saint Peter and Virgin Mary. The lid contains three medals too, this time with images of the members of the Holy Family: Saint Joseph, Jesus and Virgin Mary. The Eucharistic symbols are located between the portraits in both parts. The lid is crowned by a fine flower-shaped cross that acts as a handle. This antique gold-plated solid silver ciborium is a unique piece, made by a great artisan and with a huge decorative power. Measurements: Bases Width: 4.72 in / 11.8 cm. Height: 27 in / 10.8 cm.
