Antique Chalice and Paten in Solid Silver. France, Circa 1900

Antique solid silver chalice and paten set made in the early 20th or late 19th centuries (circa 1900). This delicate item, austere and small in size, is in good condition and is entirely made of quality silver. Though it bears just one hallmark (at the cup), after testing the metal with acid we can guarantee that all this piece is entirely made of silver. The chalice comes with an original antique paten, also made of silver and with hallmarks. The paten shows a dent at the center but the chalice is in great condition. Both pieces make up a simple and lovely set with all the charm of old-time religious silver pieces. The chalice has an ample conical-shaped circular foot with a simple and fine design. The only decoration that we can see in this part is a gold-plated silver cross attached to the front side of the foot. The cross is gorgeous: the arms are trimmed with fleur-de-lys shapes. The stem has just a central node, as simple as the rest of the piece. The chalices cup has no decoration at all; it bears two hallmarks, the one of antique French silver (the profile of Minerva goddess) and a diamond-shaped mark with the letters MR, corresponding to the silversmith. The paten that comes with the chalice is decorated with a big hand-engraved Greek cross. Close to the edge we can see the hallmarks that speak for its ancient age and quality: again, the profile of Minerva goddess and a mark with the initials NH. As stated before, at the center of the piece we can see a dent probably due to a bump. Otherwise this chalice and paten set has survived with dignity to our days.
