Antique gold-plated solid silver chalice decorated with garnets, in its original storing case and in very good condition. This piece is dated circa 1880 and comes with a solid silver paten. The two items bear hallmarks that testify for the silvers ancient age and origin. Both show a silversmiths mark with the initials LG, which indicates that they were made by the silversmith Louis Guillat, who worked in Lyon from 1861 to 1898. Both the chalice and the paten are finely preserved and show no dents, reparations of flaws. The gold-plated finish is slightly worn, but the set preserves its beauty and essence. The chalice is a truly gorgeous piece. It boasts a delicate medieval-inspired design and is adorned with garnets in all its parts: foot, node and cup. The foot is circular in shape and bears a floral-inspired decoration with six garnets. The stones adorn the central part of the embossed flowers. Between the flowers there are long engraved leaves that come from the stem. There is a small secondary node and a main one, bigger and with garnets too. The cup bears an engraved decoration of leaves and flowers with garnets, similar to the foots motifs. The two parts, foot and cup, bear their corresponding hallmarks. The gold-plated silver paten is also greatly preserved. It is decorated with a central stylish hand-engraved motif that depicts the Sacred Heart with the lances and the acronym of Christ, IHS. Near the patens edge we can see the hallmarks. The chalice and paten set can be stored in the original case, made of black-leatherette-covered cardboard. The case is somewhat worn by the trace of time and the use but still fulfills its duty. Every lover of religious antiques and quality silversmiths works will appreciate the beauty of this antique gold-plated solid silver chalice decorated with garnets.
