Striking antique neo-Gothic-style silver and metal chalice, coming from Spain and dated circa 1900. The chalice is in superb condition and shows off a very original design, typical of the medieval-inspired pieces which were in fashion in the early 20th century. The design combines two materials: the cup is made of solid silver and the foot is made of gold-plated metal. The paten which comes with the chalice is made of gold-plated solid silver; its simple look is a good complement for the complicated decoration that covers the first one. Both pieces are in fine condition and remain very attractive, though being more than one hundred years old. The chalices foot is ample and lobe-shaped, boasting a typical neo-Gothic design. It is adorned with three silvery-metal images inserted in flower-shaped frames. The rest of the metal bears a lovely gold-plated finish that remains in superb condition. If we turn this piece upside down, inside we will find a hand-engraved Spanish inscription in an elegant cursive lettering: Bodas de plata M.C.A, 24-9-932 24-9-957 (Silver Jubilee M.C.A, 24-9-932 24-9-957). This suggests that the chalice could be a gift to commemorate the silver jubilee of a priests ordination, as the initials correspond to just one person. Among the images that decorate the foot we can see a series of symmetrical floral-inspired embossed motifs, stylized and elegant. The stem that stands on the foot is hexagonal in shape and bears a central cross-shaped node, sturdy and powerful-looking. Over the node, at the top of the chalice stands the lean-silver cup fitted inside a metal base that repeats the flowery decoration of the foot. The motifs are inscribed in pointed and lobed frames, quite affine to the neo-Gothic style of the chalices design. Last but not least, the paten is made of lean silver and bears no engraved decoration at all. It does show some hallmarks, just like the chalice, but these marks are quite worn so it is impossible to trace the origin of both pieces. The sober design and the charisma of this antique neo-Gothic-style silver and metal chalice qualify it for a place in the best collection of ecclesiastic silversmith works.
