Antique Silver Chalice with Scenes from the Bible. France, Circa 1830.

Striking antique solid-silver chalice with scenes from the Bible, made in France circa 1830 and in perfect condition. The chalice comes with a paten, also made of gold-plated solid silver, and shows off a balanced classic-style look. The piece boasts a stylized and elegant design and stands out for the many embossed scenes and motifs that decorate its whole surface. The scenes depict moments of Jesuss life, scattered with Eucharist symbols (wheat stalks and bunches of grapes which symbolize the bread and the whine) typical of these pieces. The chalices foot is circular in shape. It is embellished with a fine decorative edge that surrounds three scenes, separated by fig branches with bunches of grapes. One of the scenes depicts Mary and Joseph in their trip to Bethlehem; a second one shows the moment when Jesus washes his disciples feet; and the third one depicts the Crucifixion with three women at the Crosss foot: the Virgin Mary, her sister (Cleofas wife) and Maria Magdalena. Over the foot, the chalices stem is adorned with simple central node with embossed wheat stalks, bunches of grapes and redes (these are a symbol of Gods people). At the top of the chalice, the cup boasts a stylized design with a fine embossed decoration at the base. It is composed of three scenes. One of them depicts the Agony in the Garden and shows Jesus Christ and an angel that offers Him a chalice, symbolizing the moment when He asks his Father to ´take this cup away from Me. There is a scene of the Last Supper and a third image with Jesus Christ ascending to the heavens after the Crucifixion. These scenes and the ones at the foot are quite rare in the decoration of silver Eucharistic pieces and turn this chalice into a very special item. Both the chalice and the paten bear hallmarks that testify for their original and authenticity.
