Gorgeous Antique Silver Chalice and Paten. Rare Model. France, 19th Century

Beautiful antique silver chalice and paten set, a rare model coming from France and made in the 19th century. The chalices design stands out for its original character which combines Neo-Gothic motifs and very realistic images. The chalice was made circa 1890, while the paten bear Paris hallmarks and is older (circa 1820). Both pieces remain in good condition and make up an attractive and valuable set. The chalice mounts an ample foot with wavy edge; it has a dotted background with simple and stylish medieval-inspired motifs. These motifs frame and separate different sections which contain the engraved catholic symbols of Jesus Christs Passion: the cross, the nails, the ladder and the lance. The foot bears the hallmark which identify antique French silverware pieces. The top part of the foot gets narrower and connects the central node, a bulb- or vase-shaped piece with a decoration similar to that of the foot. On top of the node we can see the fine cup, embellished with a profusion of hand-engraved symbols and images. At the bottom part we can see a series of embossed bunches of grapes and vines, symbol of the Wine which turns into the Blood of Christ during the Eucharist. The sub-cup is a beautiful piece with a remarkable handwork which includes three medals with the portraits of Jesus, Saint Joseph and Virgin Mary. The three images display beauty and serenity, being also in fine condition. The lean silver cup which crowns the piece bears the French silver hallmark near the edge, together with the silversmiths mark (illegible in this case). Last but not least, the silver paten bears the engraved IHS acronym (a symbol of Jesus Christ) and a series of hallmarks too.
