Wonderful baroque gilt-silver chalice made in France in the 19th century (circa 1880), with paten. Both pieces are made of solid silver, bear hallmarks and remain in excellent condition. The chalice is a spectacular work of art, fully covered by handmade embossed and engraved motifs and with a greatly-preserved gilt finish. The chalices foot is wide and circular in shape, and has three embossed scenes of the New Testament. The first scene depicts Jesus Christs during the Agony in the Garden, while de second one shows the moment when Jesus falls with the Cross and is attended by Simon of Cyrene. The third scene depicts the Crucifixion with Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, her sister Mary of Clopas, Mary Magdalene and Saint John the Baptist. They are all performed with high precision, with dotted backgrounds and a great attention to detail. Separating the scenes, we can see embossed images of bunches of grapes, wheat stalks and reeds, symbols of the Eucharist and the People of God. The whole foot is surrounded by a band with flowers and scrolls, on which we appreciate the French silver hallmark and the silversmiths mark. Over the foot we can see the chalices main node with the same wheat stalks, reeds and bunches of grapes as seen in the foot. Between this node and the cup, a secondary node provides the chalice with interest and with an original quality. The non-engraved gilded silver cup is supported by a gorgeous lattice sub-cup, adorned with the motifs stated before and with medallions containing portraits of the Virgin Mary, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The cup bears the mentioned hallmarks too. The chalice comes with an antique lean silver paten, with its own hallmarks and adorned with the hand-engraved acronym of Jesus Christ (HIS) and an image of the Sacred Heart.
