Extraordinary solid-silver chalice with storing case and paten, made in France circa 1880 and with an imposing presence. The chalice is a wonderful silversmiths work and boasts a great hand-engraved decoration all over its surface. It comes with its storing case and silver paten, both antique. The chalice and the paten bear hallmarks corresponding to antique French silverware and to the maker. The chalices foot is circular in shape, with a wavy edge and engraved Pompeiian-style decoration. It is adorned with embossed images of the Four Evangelists, separated by vines, wheat stalks and a cross. The stem is composed of three nodes, the main one being decorated with wheat stalks and a group of reed (symbol of the People of God). The sub-cup is a gorgeous openwork piece with embossed cherubs heads, stalks and reeds. The gilt-silver paten has an engraved Crismon at the center. It shows two small scratches but otherwise in in excellent condition. The two pieces can be stored in the original case. For its striking hand-engraved decoration and its ancient age, this extraordinary solid-silver chalice with storing case and paten deserves a place of honor in a good collection.
