Antique Gilt Silver Chalice. With medallions on the base. France, Circa 1900

Beautiful 100% gilt-silver chalice with images of Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph and made in France circa 1900. This amazing piece is especially dazzling for its great hand-engraved decoration. Except the cup, all its parts are adorned with vegetal-inspired neo-gothic motifs and borders. The most attractive part is undoubtedly the lobed foot, embellished with three almond-shaped medallions. Each one contains a three-quarter image of a member of the Sacred Family: Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. They are gorgeous low-relief images with a great chiaroscuro work. The medallions are surrounded by simple borders composed of scrolls. The stem has a node adorned with medieval-style motifs, similar to those which make up the sub-cup. The cup bears no decoration at all and, just like the base, bears the hallmarks which testify for the chalices ancient age and origin. The set includes a gilt-metal paten with no decoration at all.
