Antique Gilt-Silver Chalice with Enamels. 100% Silver. France, Circa 1900

Striking antique gilt-silver chalice with enamels, 100% silver and made in France circa 1900. The chalice comes with its original paten, also solid silver. Both pieces bear hallmarks in all their parts: the French silver hallmark and the silversmiths mark. The chalice boasts a medieval-inspired design which combines a neo-gothic style with delicate embossed motifs, more complex. The foot is lobed and is divided in six sections, as usual. Three of the sections are adorned with almond-shaped enamels depicting the members of the Sacred Family in full length. The enamels are perfectly preserved and depict Jesuschrist, Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph with the blue sky as background. The figures are painted with high precision, delicacy and detail and are real works of art, miniaturized. Between them, the other three sections are decorated with embossed wheat stalks, bunches of grapes and reeds. These are the symbols of the Eucharistic Bread and Wine, and the People of God they are usual in these type of pieces. The foot gets narrower as it approaches the stem; this has two nodes, a smaller one and the mail one. The main node is adorned with red, blue, pink and golden enameled flowers. The stem bears fine hand-engraved schematic flowers all over its surface. The openwork sub-cup shows again the wheat stalks and the bunches of grape, accompanied by scrolls, heraldic-style motifs and fig leaves. It holds the cup, with no decoration and a stylized design. If we turn this chalice upside down, inside the foot we will find a hand-engraved dedication reading A Don Juan Bta. Pascual Mateu. Pbro. En su 1ª Misa, sus Padres, 24 Junio 1904 (To Don Juan Bta. Pascual Mateu. Pbro, in his 1st Mass, his Parents, 24th June 1904). The paten which comes with the chalice is the original one, made of gilt solid silver and with a hand-engraved image of the Lamb of God, framed by the inscription GNUS DEI PANIS VIVUS (Lamb of the Living Bread).
