Antique Ivory Christ with Silver Appliqués. 19th Century. With CITES

Gorgeous antique ivory Christ with silver appliqués, original from the 19th century and with CITES. This delicate and beautiful figure is a real work of art which shows a wonderful hand-carved work of high-level quality. The figure is attached to a black wooden cross which stands on a five-step pedestal. It is made of ivory and reproduces the image of Jesus Christ to the minimum detail, from the fingers and the toes to the face, including the teeth and the tongue which can be seen through the half-open mouth. The face shows an intense expression, half way between suffering and exaltation, worthy of an accomplished sculptor. The crosss arms are trimmed with carved silver appliqués; we can also see fan-shaped silver details at the four outer corners and a silver scroll-shaped appliqué with the INRI inscription over Jesuss head. At the foot of the cross, just under the figures feet we can see a silver skull with two crossed bones, a symbol of Death. The four silver nails which attach the figure to the cross are original from the time too.
