Extraordinary Antique Chalice with Images. Lyon, France, 1818-1838

Extraordinary antique chalice with images made in Lyon, France, between 1818 and 1838, in good condition and big in size. This piece is a real work of art for its magnificent design and beautiful hand-engraved and embossed decoration. It has hallmarks at the foot and the cups edge: the profile of an elder woman tells us that the chalice is made of 950-silver. This mark was used from 1818 and 1838. The hallmark with a profile of a bearded man and the number 67 refers to the city of manufacture, Lyon, France. The chalices foot is wide and is adorned with three hand-engraved scenes, depicting passages of the Gospel: the Flight into Egypt of the Sacred Family, the moment when Jesus washes His disciples feet and the Agony in the Garden, when Jesus pleads for God: Remove this chalice from me. At the edge we can see several religious symbols: the Sacred Heart, the Eye of the Providence and the Tables of the Law. At the stem, the main node is embellished with engraved angels heads and Eucharistic symbology: grapes in the vine and wheat stalks. The cup stands on a fine-looking subcup, decorated with medallions containing portraits of the Four Evangelists and their respective symbols. This part has a very small flaw in one of the decorative motifs located between medallions, scarcely perceptible. The same can be said about the really small flaw which can be appreciated in the cups edge: they do not interfere at all in the spectacular presence of this chalice, a superb piece worthy to belong to any cathedral. The paten which comes with it was made some time later, but it is also an ancient piece (circa 1900). It is decorated with a lovely engraved motif containing the initials IHS. This extraordinary antique chalice with images will be a life companion for a priest who has just been ordained. It is a great piece which exudes history, beauty and quality.
