This striking bookstand is made of bronze and dates from the 19th century. It comes from France and is a high-quality piece, a real sacred art work which has survived to our days in great condition. The bookstand is made up of a rectangular box that stands on four small legs and is covered by a cover that can be lifted in order to lean the Missal or the Bible in religious ceremonies. The box is undoubtedly the best part of the piece: it is composed of a string of bronze flower-shaped pieces, welded and framed by a bronze structure. The pieces on both sides are decorated with transparent colored stones, while the ones at the rear bear no decorative details. The front part is the most beautiful of the box. The pieces are decorated with enamels and stones. The central enamel depicts Jesus Christ and is the bigger one. On both sides of this detail, four medals depict the Four Evangelists symbols (Matthew, Marcus, Lucas and John). The enamels have a light blue background and are decorated with different colors: red, green, yellow and gold. They are all in great condition; the colors look deep and bright and the enamels show no cracks or dents. The upper lid, that can be lifted in order to lean the book, is a solid bronze sheet with a polished a soft surface. This surface is decorated with punched motive in the shape of a Greek cross, inserted into a lobed frame. The solidity of this piece makes an interesting contrast with the lightness of the boxs lacework, and together with the colorful enamels they make of this bookstand a highly decorative piece and very ancient too. Measurements: Width: 330 mm. Height (lid lifted): 440 mm.
