Antique Solid Silver Sewing Set in its Original Case. France, XIX Century

Attractive sewing set composed of four sterling silver pieces, all of them original from the era and with their hallmarks. The set was made in France in the 19th century and comes in its beautiful original case, made of wood and with inlaid decoration. The item consists of five basic sewing utensils: scissors, a thimble, a punch, a tapestry needle and a small pin or needle case. All the pieces are gorgeous and bear hallmarks that testify for the quality and the original of the silver they are made of. The scissors, the pin/needle case and the punch are profusely decorated with embossed motives that cover nearly all the metal surface. They are vegetal-inspired motives fine and delicate fringes with leaves that twist, creating volutes and waves. These details are closely related with the Romantic art style, with its love for excess and horror vacui. In the scissors, the waves and volutes give shape to their two pieces and create a charming lovely design. The punch and the pin/needle case are decorated this way too: the punch shows a fully embossed top head and the case, with its narrow and lean design, boasts a lot of motives along the two pieces that compose it. The thimble and the needle show a more functional design, probably due to their small size. As stated before, all the pieces bear hallmarks; one of them appears in every utensil and depicts a boars head. On the other hand, the wooden case where this set is stored is a lovely article. It is made of solid walnut wood, with a deep brown color and dark veneer, and shows off inlaid wooden strips that frame the covers edge. In the center of this piece we can see a smooth brass inlaid shield. Inside, the case still preserves its deep blue satin lining in good condition.
