Striking solid silver ball handbag made in Russia in the late 19th century (circa 1890). This delicate piece is made of solid silver and decorated with a central pattern on each side. Both motives are enhanced by touches of gold and antique-cut diamonds. One of the motives is a capital A with a modernist design, under which we can see the Roman number III. This probably refers to Alexander III, a Russian czar from 1845 and 1894. On the other side of the handbag there is a similar M with the number II, which is surely the initial of Maria Fiodorovna, Alexanders wife. Both initials are richly adorned with a lot of small diamonds that increase the aesthetical and material value of the item. This handbag belonged surely to any noble Russia dame and has come to our hands complete and in good condition. It still preserves the original chain and lock. The inside is covered by light green satin; this fabric is original from the era and looks somewhat worn. Into the handbag there is a small purse, attached to the central hinge and with its own lock. The handbag is full of the charm of old Russian times, with the czars and their luxurious courts, and is undoubtedly a highly beautiful item. The outside decoration of the silver is wonderful, following the modernist style typical of the era. Around the initials we can see a delicate embossed motive formed by flowers and leaves, which enhances the shiny silver. The initials are framed by aristocratic laurel wreaths. On one side we can see the silversmiths hallmarks, with two capital letters: EK. These hallmarks testify for this handbags authenticity and value. It is an antique piece, full of character and charm. Measurements: 93 mm width x 90 mm height.
