Rolling parallel rule for nautical use made in England in the first third of the 10th century. It is a quality piece, made of polished brass and with the manufacturers signature. The rule comes in its original solid wooden case and is in good condition, especially if we take in consideration that this article has a long life behind. The piece has not been restored nor refinished as we consider that the patina, the signs of the trace of time and use it shows are part of its past. The rule is big in size, with a total length of almost 50 cm. The brass base bears the engraved manufacturers name, J. CASARTELLI, and also the name of the city where it was made: MANCHESTER. Over the base we can see the handle used to hold and slide the rule, so the user can easily draw the lines. On each end there are two rolling cylinders that let the article be slid over the paper. These rules are designed for nautical use and they are still used on sea charts. The rule comes in its original solid pinewood case. It boasts fine dovetail joints at the box and the lid. This assemblage system is solid and artisanal, providing this piece with a great charm. The wood shows a dark reddish finish, slightly worn at the edges and corners. This is logical if we consider that this is not a decorative piece but it was used for many years. The case keeps the original hinges and the shutting hooks too. This rolling parallel rule is an original piece made in the early 20th century. It is a very special item, bound to be part of a good collection of nautical antiques.Measurements: Length: 48.5 cm/19 in. Depth: 9.5 cm/3.5 in.
