Fine small topographic level made in Germany in the early 20th century (circa 1900). This wonderful article, full of nostalgic charm and precision, comes disassembled into its original vintage case. The set is complete and works fine, preserving all its original components parts. The level is made of black-enameled iron with golden brass pieces that preserve the original transparent lacquer. One of the level components, the iron plate located under the telescope, bears an engraved inscription: R. REISS LIEBENWERDA. This inscription indicates that the instrument was manufactured by the company of the same name, founded by the German topographer and businessman Herrmann Robert Reiss (1844-1911). Though he first studied to be a topographer, with the trace of time he had to increase his salary and in 1882 started a small business to sell topographic and surveying instruments. His experienced let him improve some of the existing instrument, creating precise devices such as the level we can see in these images. This level is small in size and is thought for fieldwork. It is designed to be connected to a tripod, as it is a topographers tool. The black enamel that covers the iron is in good condition and so are the golden brass components. All of them are original and work perfectly: the level can be used like new. Near the engraved manufacturers name and city we can also see a serial number: 9258. On the other hand, the original case is outside covered by black faux leather, while inside it is lined with gorgeous bright blue velvet. On the lids right bottom corner we can see the engraved manufacturers name and city. Complete, professional and smart, this amazing topographic level is bound to become part of the best collection of vintage surveying instruments. Measurements: Width: 4.7 in/12 cm.
