This fine and curious device is a portable surveying level in very good condition and in its original case. The level is well preserved and is in working order. It was made in Germany in the early 20th century (circa 1900) and is undoubtedly a decorative and original piece. This item preserves all its component parts and is mounted on a black wooden pedestal, a discreet and stable piece. The telescope also keeps the original antique lenses. The black lacquer that coves the iron part is slightly worn but this feature only enhances the levels fine antique look. The brass component parts are in very good condition, and functional. The glass bubble located under the telescope is well preserved and is the original one. The brass case that protects the bubble bears the following engraved inscription: Fr. D.R.P. 36795, corresponding to the devices patent number. One of the black-lacquered iron parts shows an engraved compass-shaped logo with the capital letters GB and the inscription Hbd. GB stands for Georg Butenschön, a German manufacturer of surveying instruments. The level can be dismantled in several parts, so they can be stored inside the case that comes with it. The case has different compartments, one for each part. Outside the case is covered by black faux leather, in good condition and with the original brass locks. Inside it boasts a great purple velvet lining; the fabric is well preserved and shows only slights signs of wear that do not interfere with the items charm and great look. Quite original and really interesting, this evocative portable surveying level will be the starring piece of a collection of ancient instruments. Measurements: Width: 5.3 in /13.5 cm.
