This stunning antique piece is a cylindrical slide rule, also known as Fuller calculator. The item was made in England in 1930 and has survived to our days in excellent condition. There is only one small piece missing, a metal rod designed to be inserted in the hole of the handle in order to attach the rule to the base. This rod can be easily substituted for a new piece, but otherwise the rule can be perfectly operated without it. The rest of the component parts are original and remain in optimal condition, including the original instructions manual. The brass pointer that marks the inscriptions printed in the paper bears the devices name, FULLER CALCULATOR, and the inscription MADE IN ENGLAND engraved in the metal. At the other end of the pointer we can see the serial number 6271-30; the number 30 probably refers to the year of making.George Fuller was a professor of civil engineering at Queens University, Belfast. After developing the cylindrical slide rule, he patented his invention in 1874. Shortly after, the famous firm W. F. Stanley started manufacturing this rules; the company produced about 14000 rules over nearly one hundred years. The manufacturers name is printed in the paper cylinder (STANLEY Maker LONDON) and in the green and white label stack to the inside of the wooden cases cover. The rule comes with an instruction leaflet with the Stanley name printed on the cover. This instrument is designed to perform arithmetic calculations in shops and businesses it mounts a wood-finished bakelite cylinder with tapered handle, covered of paper and with a series of tables printed on it. Inside this piece there is another cylinder, in this case made of leather and with a felt lining that ensures smooth movement. The storing case that acts as the rules base too is made of dark-finished solid wood, with delicate dovetail joints and original metalwork. All the lovers of mathematical antiques will find a real treasure in this Fuller cylindrical slide rule, a great piece that still provides exact results.Measurements: Width: 17.7 in / 45 cm.
