Fine antique Hilger & Watts theodolite made in London between 1967 and 1969. The theodolite is an original piece in wonderful condition. All the component parts and pieces are original too and work perfectly, so today this instrument could easily be used for surveying tasks. The devices body is made of cast iron with a fine hammered-grey enameled finish. The finish is well preserved and scarcely shows any signs of wear. The chromed-metal parts also remain in good condition. Riveted to one of the theodolites sides we can see a silvery metal plate with the manufacturers name, HILGER & WATTS, engraved inside an oval. The plate also bears the engraved model number of the instrument (ST516-4) and the serial number 239438 together with the inscription MADE IN ENGLAND. The theodolite comes into its original storing case, made of metal and with a leather belt (to close and carry it) in good condition. The case shows clear signs of wear due to the trace of time and the use, but it is still the best container to carry the device. One of the closure hooks on the case is broken and can not be used. The other works well. Inside the case there is a paper sticker with handwritten details indicating the date of the final inspection and adjustment. This antique theodolite made in the 60s is a reliable and original device with a very personal attractiveness. It is the ideal piece to complete a good collection of technical and scientific antiques. Measurements: Width: 5.9 in / 15 cm. Height: 10.2 in / 26 cm.Hilger & Watts History Hilger & Watts Ltd. was founded in London after Messrs. E.R. Watts & Son Ltd and Adam Hilger Ltd. merged. It started out in 1874 to manufacture scientific research instruments. Before the merger, each company was specialized in a type of complementary instruments: while Messrs, E.R. Watts & Son Ltd. (founded in 1874) had a worldwide reputation in the manufacture of surveying instruments for engineers, Adam Hilger Ltd. made industrial research devices. In the late 1940s the company employed around 1300 workers in six different factories.
