Fine antique Hilger & Watts theodolite in its original solid wooden case. This instrument was made in London between 1951 and 1953, being in great condition and working order: the mobile component parts are quite well preserved and so are the lenses and eyepieces. This makes it possible to use the device for surveying tasks, just like when it was originally manufactured. The theodolite mounts a swivel base and small adjustable legs; together with the bubble level it includes, they make it possible to use it on any stable surface. It comes with a cleaning and maintenance kit too, original from the time. The instrument is made of grey enameled cast iron; the finish is in good condition and only shows slight signs of wear, almost imperceptible to the eye. At the base of the theodolites top part we can see an engraved white inscription with the manufacturers name and the devices serial number: HILGER & WATTS LTD. Nº 77143. The mobile chromed-metal component parts are also greatly preserved and move softly, making it possible to adjust the instrument in order to use it. The solid wooden case designed to store the theodolite is in good condition too, with only the logical signs of wear. The metal reinforcements, locks and hinges are original and remain functional, and so does the carrying leather belt. Inside the cover there are two metal plates with information about the manufacturer and the shop where the instrument was bought, and two paper stickers with data about the theodolite and instructions to properly store it. For its imposing look, old age and good condition, this antique theodolite is a collectors piece worthy of inclusion in any science and technology museum. Measurements: Width: 6.6 in / 17 cm. It started out in 1874 to manufacture scientific research instruments. Before the merger, each company was specialized in a type of complementary instruments: while Messrs, E.R. Watts & Son Ltd. (founded in 1874) had a worldwide reputation in the manufacture of surveying instruments for engineers, Adam Hilger Ltd. made industrial research devices. In the late 1940s the company employed around 1300 workers in six different factories.
