Awesome antique brass theodolite made in France in 1900 and in very good condition and working order. The theodolite, made by Albert Lepetit and preserved in its original wooden case, is almost complete. The only part missing is the focus thumb screw, but this is not quite as the user can focus the lens by hand. Otherwise the device looks great: the brass shows no signs of wear or rust and preserves the original transparent lacquered finish which creates a delicate patina over the shiny metal. In order to put the theodolite into the case, it is compulsory to dismantle it in different parts. Inside the case mounts a series of wooden mobile pieces and compartments that hold each part in its place. The theodolite is composed of a rotating circular part that stands on a tripod. The tripods legs mount adjustment screws that make it possible to level the instrument. Over the base there are two pieces which support the telescope; there is also an antique bubble level, original from the time and in great condition. On the other hand, the wooden case designed to store the instrument is antique and sturdy. The wooden pieces are connected by tiny and delicate dovetail joints. It preserves the original lock and key, and the carrying handle too. Inside there is a paper label with the manufacturers names and address; among them we can read the name of ALBERT LEPETIT. As beautiful as interesting, this antique Albert Lepetit brass theodolite is an exclusive piece which will stand out in a stylish study or living room. The firm that would one day be ruled by Lepetit started out in 1845, when two apprentices of the prestigious maker Henri Gambey, Lenoir and Lorieux, found the first business. Years later A. Hurlimann took over the company which in 1900 passes to Ponthus & Therode. In 1902 the business moves to the Victor Considerant Street in Paris. In 1920 the business became property of Roger Poulin.
