Antique Thornton pocket sextant made in Manchester, England circa 1920. This fine ship instrument is in very good condition and fine working order. Pocket or box sextants were invented by Edward Troughton in the late 17th century, keeping a very similar design through the decades. The one that we can see in the images is signed by AC. THORNTON LTD. MANCHESTER, a company that produced a great number of units in the early 20th century. The sextants cover can be removed and used as a base for the device. This includes a vernier and a mobile handle with a small scale at the end. The readings can be seen with the tiny magnifying glass at the top. The device includes a small scope that pulls out of the side and two retractable filters in green and red glass. Inside the cover we find a small paper sheet with printed data to use the sextant. This item comes in its original leather case, in great condition and with the original strap and seams.
