This striking golden brass level was made in England in 1900 by G. W. Strawson brand of London. The instrument is in very good condition and keeps all its original components, including the bubble capsules. With its nice and complex design, the level has an adjustable base which can be attached to the bottom of the instrument to use it on different surfaces. The level comes in its original case made of solid mahogany wood, a sober and elegant box fit to store the different parts that make up the piece. The brass the level is made of is well preserved and shows no bumps, dents or relevant flaws. The base where the device stands on has four screws designed to adjust it. These screws are slightly different from the rest of the instruments pieces as they boast a nice coppery finish. The stand is polished and shiny, with no trace of rust or worn parts. The level, on the other hand, is also in good condition though it shows some slight signs of wear due to its ancient age and use. Nevertheless these details only provide the item with even more charm and authenticity. The capsules and lenses are in perfect condition and nowadays they let us use the level to check the horizontal and vertical positions just as any new instrument would do.The wooden case where the level can be stored is made of mahogany, a valuable and noble wood characterized by its deep dark red color. It is complete and has no broken or missing parts; though its finish shows some slight scratches, it can be easily restored. The box keeps its original lock and one of the shutting hooks. Inside the lid we can see a paper label attached to the wood with the following inscription: G. W. Strawson Mathematical Drawing Instruments Theodolites & Levels - Percy Street, Tottenham Court Road London W. This guarantees us that the level was made by G. W. Strawson, whose name is also engraved in the level. This level is surely a wonderful antique surveying instrument that in spite of being more than a hundred years old, has survived to our days in excellent condition. It is the perfect piece for a demanding collector of technical and scientific antiques.Measurements: Width: 390 mm. Height: 200 mm.
