Antique hunting bayonet made of steel and wood, fully engraved by hand with decorative motives and in very good condition. This weapon is longer than the normal plug bayonets and was made in Central Europe, probably in France or Germay circa 1850; it is an antique piece with a great decorative power. The bayonet has a lovely wooden grip, that stands out in the design together with the hand-engraved motives that also embellish this piece. The weapon preserves its original scabbard, made of real leather and with the original metal chappe and locket. These hunting weapons were designed to be mounted on muzzle-loading firearms. As these firearms could only shoot once, the hunter needed the bayonet to finish the big game. This particular bayonet has survived to our days in great condition and still shows a scaring look, softened by its balanced design and beautiful decoration. The polished wooden grip shines brightly, showing off a cylindrical and flat darker part (the grip itself) and a round part, lighter and that connects to the metal cross-guard. The cross-guard is composed by two quillons that form an S; in the center there are hand-engraved floral motives on both sides. Under the cross-guard lays a decorative detail that draws powerfully our attention. It is a scallop-shaped metal piece attached to the bayonet, composed of a trellis framed by a cord and a big floral motive in the center. This decoration is engraved by hand on the metal and creates a very beautiful piece. On the other hand, the bayonets rain guard is engraved on both sides with schematic images of weapons, vegetal motives and two animals: a boar and a deer. Last but not least, the scabbard shows some signs of the trace of time and the use that provide it with attractive and authenticity, it preserves the original metal chappe and locket in excellent condition. Because of its great decorative beauty, this Central European plug bayonet deserves a place of honor in the best collection of European antique weapons. Measurements: Bayonet: 22.1 in/54 cm. Scabbard: 13.7 in/35 cm.
