This impressive machete is an exclusive piece made in Germany in the late 19th century (circa 1890). This is a weapon designed to be used by the Spanish army officers during the war of Cuba, a beautiful non official model. The machete is in excellent condition and comes with its original dark brown leather scabbard, also well preserved. The brass grip is a very remarkable part of this machete, with its animal-like shape and detailed hand-carving work. In the blade, near the grip we can see a clear inscription engraved in the metal that reads: MARTIN FALK HAMBURGO (Hamburg). Just over it there is a monogram in the shape of a horse with a royal crown and an anchor emerging from below. The logo is accompanied by the word CABALLO (horse). The non official machetes used by the Spanish army in Cuba were usually supplied by German, American and English makers who manufactured beautiful and quality weapons, extremely appreciated by the Spanish. The machetes grip is highly appealing. It is a polished brass element with the pommel shaped like a lions head. The sides are decorated with a curious engraved motive that imitates fish scales; together with the feline head this feature creates a mythological-inspired beast. This look is enhanced by the cross-guard, a part that opens creating two volutes quite similar to a fish tail. The original scabbard is also a fine article, with a lovely decoration embossed along the piece and steel locket and head. The locket is embellished with a metal piece engraved with a fierce lions face. Very elegant and well preserved, this historic machete will stand out in the most important place of a stylish home. Measurements: Blade: 24.8 in/ 63 cm. Machete (with grip): 33.4 in/85 cm.
