This impressive sword is a very ancient piece that comes from Turkey and was forged in the early 19th century. It is a yagatan, a kind of saber or cutlass with double curve, bevel and counterbevel. It comes with its original scabbard made of reddish leather and with steel pipe and head. The hilt is made of hand-engraved solid silver, a beautiful and elegant piece. Both the sword and the scabbard are wonderfully preserved, making up a very attractive and interesting piece for every lover of historic antiques and ancient swords. The name of this kind of swords, yagatan, comes from Turkey though it is known that these weapons were also commonly forged in other Eastern countries. It is believed to come from the name of a Turkish commandant and smith known as Yagatan Baba y?t?g?n is the Turkish word for knife. This soldier founded a people and named it after his nickname, and the swords that his people forged also received the name of yagatan. The hilts of these swords were commonly made of valuable materials such as mother-of-pearl, jade, noble woods or solid silver as in this case. As we can see in the photographs, this yagatans hilt boasts a very special design. As it usually happens in these weapons, it has two bulges designed to enhance the grip and prevent it from sliding. The silver hilt of this piece is decorated with embossed flowers and circles, engraved by hand and that provide it with a great beauty. The steel blade is very well preserved and so is the reddish-leather scabbard whose great look has defied the trace of time. This striking yagatan is a historic and decorative item, a piece that cannot be missing in a complete sword collection. Measurements: Yagatán: 27.5 in / 70 cm Longitud.
