This stylized and sober sword is a weapon made in Spain in the 19th century (1898). It is a Spanish Army infantry officers sword, probably used during the end of the Cuban War of Independence. The sword is model 1887, a simple and elegant weapon it is well preserved and comes with its original steel scabbard. Though showing some slight signs of the trace of time, the sword boasts an excellent condition and the blade looks shiny and polished, well protected by the solid scabbard. Its fine design and good condition turn it into a very interesting piece for any collector. In the blade, near the hilt we can see the inscription ARTa. FAB.a DE TOLEDO 1898. These words indicate that the sword was forged in the Edged Weapons Factory of Toledo, Spain. Over the course of the centuries, the city of Toledo was renowned for the work of the sword manufacturers that lived in it. For this reason, the king Carlos III decided to create a sword factory that started working in 1761. The factory was located in the Casa de la Moneda (Toledo Mint) but was shortly moved near Tagus river. The new factory was opened in 1780 and suffered different vicissitudes during the years, among them two invasions by the French troops. From the 1830s its prestige grew constantly and so did the swords quality. In 1998 the factorys building changed its use and became the University Campus of Toledo. This amazing antique sword is a good example of the quality of the weapons forged in Edged Weapons Factory of Toledo. The blade is shiny and even and shows no traces of rust, and the hilt is simple and elegant. The cross-guard and the quillon are part of an only piece that ends in the pommel, creating a beautiful curve. The grip preserves the original leather covering wire in excellent condition. On the other hand, the steel scabbard is also well preserved: it has the original ring and the metal looks good. This fine sword has surely a fascinating history behind, being also a powerfully decorative and evocative piece. Measurements: Sword: Length: 37 in / 94 cm. Scabbard: Length: 31.6 in / 80.5 cm.
