Antique French sword bayonet mod. 1866 for Chassepot rifle, made in France circa 1870. This fascinating weapon mounts yataghan-style steel blade and steel and brass hilt, and comes with its original scabbard, also made of steel. The blade bears a hand-engraved inscription in an elegant cursive lettering, currently illegible; it is in fine condition, boasting the patina provided by the trace of time and use which is also visible at the scabbard. Both pieces bear the same serial number: 140455, which certifies that they are part of the same set. The swords hilt mounts brass grip plates with horizontal grooves, attached to the base by steel rivets. The cross-guard includes a clamp to attach the bayonet sword to the rifle, and the hooked quillon typical of these weapons.
