Antique rapier sword from the 18th century, probably French (though we cannot be sure of it). This is a very special piece, for its ancient age and gorgeous hilt. Part of the bowl-shaped cross-guard is detached from the rest of the hilt, but it is firm and does not present any risk of full detachment. The name rapier comes from the Spanish ropera, meaning cloth sword. They were called this way as they were part of civil garments, being worn both for fashion and personal defense. This name was first heard in Spain in 1468 and from there it was adopted in France (rapière) and England (rapier). These swords were commonly used in duels. The one that we can see in the images mounts steel blade and embossed hilt, with metal-covered grip and twisted wire in good condition. It does boast a great and delicate design, full of hand-engraved motifs and openwork decoration. This antique rapier from the 18th century will stand out in any collection for its elegance and ancient age. Dimensions: Blade Length: 28.15 in / 71.5 cm. Total Length: 35 in / 89 cm.
