Antique British saber sword for infantry officer mod. 1803, made in England during the Napoleonic Wars and in really good condition. The saber comes with its original scabbard; both pieces are very beautiful and remain finely preserved. The blade does not enter completely into the scabbard, probably because this sword was exposed outside it for many years. Even so, the part which remains exposed is very small. The blade bears a lovely acid-etched decoration on both sides we can see a profusion of symbols, scrolls, vegetal motifs, the monogram of King George III of England, the Royal coat of arms, and allegories of universal themes such as victory or war. The spine bears the manufacturers name and address of the sword, Richard Johnston , 68 St James St. , London, in capital letters. The hilt is as good-looking as the blade, with brass cross-guard a D-guard and grip with the original leather and twine. The pommel is shaped as a lions head, while at the point where the D-guard connects the cross-guard the monogram or Royal cypher of King George III can be seen. The scabbards great look matches the saber: it is made of black leather with hand-engraved brass locket, chape and center. The locket bears a wonderful inscription inside an oval with the manufacturers name and address: R JOHNSTON late BLAND & FOSTER Sword Cutler & Bett Mideer to his MAJESTY 68 St James Strt LONDON. For its inherent beauty and great quality, this antique British saber for infantry officer mod. 1803 (Napoleonic Wars) will stand out as part of a good collection.
