Antique shell hilt sword by Enrique Coel (Heinrich Koel) En Alemania (In Germany), made circa 1650 (17th century) and in good condition. This gorgeous antique piece stands out for the engraved decoration which adorns the two shell-shaped parts of the hilt, remaining visible and deeply marked. The sword bears the inscription Enrique Coel on one side and En Alemania (In Germany) in the other, which indicates that the sword was made by the renowned German swordsmith, who exported many pieces. The double-shell hilt is a classic Renaissance design, perfect to protect the hand from being cut. The Shell-shaped parts which make up the swords hilt bear two hand-engraved scenes, schematic and simple. One of them is adorned with an image of three beasts, probably lions, disposed around an altar. The other one shows two symmetrical birds in profile, flanking what looks like an oval shield or a mandorla. The rest of the hilt is composed of a cross-guard with two curved quillons and a similar D-guard (knuckle bow). The hilt is made of wood and preserves the original twine. This superb antique sword, full of attractive and nobleness, is worthy to belong to a museum of ancient weapons. Dimensions: Blade Length: 35 in / 89 cm. Total Length: 41 in / 104 cm.
