This curious device is an original typewriter made in the late 19th century (circa 1890). It was manufactured in the USA by the prestigious American Typewriter Company. Originally known as American Typer, this machine does not correspond to the classic keyboard typewriter we are used to, but it instead related to the labeling machines that print the symbols after selecting them from a wheel. So this is undoubtedly a collectors piece. The American Typer (model nº 2 was later known as American Typewriter) started being commercialized in the 1890s as an alternative for those searching for a more affordable typewriter. This design was developed by French inventor Louis Valiquet and the American firm acquired the patent for manufacturing. It was quite simple to use and became a very popular machine. Curiously enough, in Europe these devices were sold under the name Champignon (mushroom in French) because of their shape. The typewriter is in good condition, with a good-looking black finish and the original golden decorative details. The white plate with the numbers and the letters can be perfectly read: the symbols are well preserved. The plate with the manufacturing companys name and address is also clearly legible. The typewriters mechanism works correctly although the rubber types are deteriorated. Nevertheless, this detail does not interfere with the typewriters beauty and elegance, a real museum piece full of nostalgic charm and interest. Because of its rareness and originality, this antique typewriter will become the starring piece of the most complete collection.
