This antique and original typewriter is an American Model Nº8, a very remarkable design from the early 20th century in really good condition. The machine sits on the original base, a beautiful oak wooden plank, and keeps the original protecting case made of enameled metal sheet. The mechanism has been cleaned and fine-tuned so it works like new and can be used to type documents. On the other hand, its original design turns it into a real collectors item. Over the carriage we can see the following inscription: MANUFACTURED BY THE AMERICAN TYPEWRITER COMPANY NEW YORK. The factory launched the first model in 1902 as a cheap alternative for the most popular typewriters of the day. The two first versions were index writers indeed, but the third one was already a standard downstrike typewriter. Models 7 and 8 were commercialized also under different market names such as Armstrong, a brand that was used in the United Kingdom. The company ended the production in 1915. American typewriters are unmistakable because of the curious shape of the keys and the rectangular cover over the key levers. The keyboard is composed of hexagonal black pieces with white symbols and letters. The market name American is printed on the cover of the key levers, and over the carriage we can see the models name, Model Nº8. In spite of its ancient age, this typewriter shows off an impressive condition and a surprisingly modern design: these features turn it into a very special piece. This American Model Nº8 typewriter will be the perfect gift for any lover of industrial design and antiques.
