This elegant antique typewriter is an Imperial model D, a popular machine which was commercialized from 1919 on. The Imperial Typewriter Company was an English firm founded by Spanish-American engineer Hidalgo Moya in Leicester, in 1908. Models A, B and C, which were made before the current one, had circular keyboards, while Model D had straight keyboard and was a portable model. The most significant difference between this model and the former ones is precisely its straight keyboard, which (like all the rest) can be removed from the carriage and replaced by another one with a different type of lettering. This typewriter is black, though this model was also produced in green. It was the last model made by the Imperial Typewriter Company which showed a downstrike keyboard, a system by means of which the keys hit the paper downwards. On the front of the machine, just over the keyboard, we can read the following text in golden lettering: SOLE DISTRIBUTORS THE IMPERIAL TYPEWRITERS SALES Cº LONDON. The typewriter is in good condition and works very well. The black paint and the mechanism show some slight signs of wear, due to the trace of time, which in no means interfere with the proper functioning of the machine. The keyboard is composed of round keys with a white background and black lettering, and is in very good condition. The typewriter also keeps the original ink ribbon. Over the golden inscription we can see a bigger one, in dark letters, which says IMPERIAL STANDARD. Overall, this Imperial typewriter from the first half of the 20th century is a charming item, full of history. A vintage model which has survived to the present in great condition, being the perfect acquisition for any lover of antique typewriters from the most prestigious brands. Measurements: 385 mm width x 180 mm height.
