Curious typewriter from the end of the 20th century, made by prestigious Remington & Sons brand. Remington typewriters were the first produced and sold in considerable numbers, more specifically Remington Nº 1. This model was designed by engineer Christopher Sholes and manufactured by Sholes & Glidden. The typewriter had some revolutionary innovations, such as the qwerty keyboard and the 'shift' key, that literally shifted the carriage to the front in order to type capitals. A 'shift' key is what we still call it on our computer keyboards today. This particular model is a Remington Nº 6, which was launched some years later. It was also a very popular model; in fact, Remington typewriters were the most popular of their time. It is an frontstrike machine, with the types hanging down in a circle. When hitting a key, the type would swing up against the platen and leave an impression of the letter on the paper. The typist would have to lift the carriage to see what was written. Later, this system was abandoned for downstrike systems which let the user see what is written while he or she works. So this typewriter is an antique and very revolutionary model. The piece is in very good condition, especially considering its old age. Its square hollow shape is very remarkable and we can see clearly the inside mechanism and the types, which make up a circular basket-shaped structure. The machine is in good working order, though the ribbon is somewhat dry. The black-lacquered iron is slightly worn in some places, but this is easy to restore. All the components are original. At the front we can read the inscription Remington Standard Typewriter Nº 6 in golden lettering, while at the rear and over the carriage we can see again the word Remington. Over the carriage there is also a red round label with pointed border with the logo, the slogan and the name of the machine, while just over the keyboard there is another inscription: Manufactured by Wyckoff, Seamans & Benedict, Ilion, New York, USA. This wonderful Remington Nº 6 typewriter echoes a time past, and will surely fill its present owner with pride.
