This appealing German typewriter is a Mercedes Nº 3, well preserved and working like new. Made of iron with black-lacquered finish, it keeps all its original components and can be perfectly used to write. The article has a solid presence, with a basic and rational design typical of German machines. This model has a particular feature: it lets the user dissemble the keyboard easily in order to clean the inside parts, repair the typewriter or make any adjustment. At the top of the piece, just over the carriage we can see a big inscription in beige letter with the name of the model, MERCEDES.The keyboard is composed of round keys with white background and black letters, except for the upper-left key intended to change the writings color (red or black), marked with both tones. Each key is surrounded by a slim silvery circle, a typical detail of vintage typewriters. On both sides of the keyboard we find two big medals with inscriptions inside: the left one tells us that Mercedes brand got a Grand Prix in 1910 and a Golden Medal in 1911, in Mailand and Buenos Aires respectively. On the right side of the typewriter there is another medal with the number of the model: MODEL Nº3. At the back of the machine there is another inscription in white lettering:BERLIN W.30. MERCEDES BUREAU MASCHINEN GES.M.B.H.The machines body shows two opening, one at each side, through which we can see part of the inner mechanism. This is an upstrike typewriter that lets the user read what he or she is typing. Mercedes typewriters were produced by Mercedes Büromaschinen-Werke A.G, a Berliner company; they started being made in 1907. They were developed by Franz Schuller. The first version of Mercedes Nº3 was manufactured in 1912, and the second (this particular model) was launched in 1922.This Mercedes Nº3 typewriter is undoubtedly a very decorative piece, worthy of a lover of antique machines made in the early 20th century.
