Attractive Underwood Nº 5 typewriter made in Germany in 1920. This vintage piece typewriter is one of the most popular models even made and its design set a precedent in the field of typing. The first Underwood Nº 5 was made in 1901 and its production lasted for three decades. The primera Underwood was designed by Franz Wagner in 1895 and production was taken up by John Underwood, son of a typewriter ribbon manufacturer. It was not exactly the first 4-bank frontstrike typewriter in the market, but it was in fact the first totally reliable one. This piece is a great example of successful Nº 5 and looks as beautiful as functional as the first day of use. The typewriter keeps all its original components and the lovely black lacquer that covers the cast-iron body is also in very good condition. We can also see some golden details and threads that embellish the front and the sides, as well as the inscriptions in golden lettering that are printed both at the front and the rear. Under the opening that lets us see the type bars we can read the brands name, Underwood, that is also printed over the carriage accompanied by the logo: a drawing of typewriter into a shield and over the words Made in USA. At the rear we can also see the name Underwood and an inscription: Underwood Typewriter Company Protected by United States and Foreign Patents Manufactured in Hartford, Conn., USA. This typewriters keyboard is typical of this model. It is made up by smart round keys with white background and slim black letters. All the pieces are framed by the classical nickel ring that embellishes and reinforces them. This is a German keyboard, which indicates that the typewriter was made for the German market. The keys are in perfect condition, with no visible flaws or signs of wear, and all of them work perfectly. This typewriter is undoubtedly a highly decorative and functional article, worthy of the most elegant study or living room.
