This sober and elegant German Continental typewriter was made in the 1940s. Continental brand was founded in 1885 by Johan Winklhofer and Richard Jaenicke in Chemintz. The firm started producing bicycles and motorcycles, and in 1940 also began to manufacture engineering tools. The first Continental typewriter was launched in 1904. This year only twenty four units were produced, but the following year 680 typewriters were made and until the end of production (that came in 1949), several million Continental typewriters were manufactured and sold. This particular model is a design from the last decade of production and boasts a solid and attractive appearance, as beautiful and functional as when it was made. The piece is in great condition, with its black-lacquered body looking shiny and polished and preserving all its original components. It works perfectly and can be used to type just like new. The brands name is printed over the keyboard and also in the piece just below the carriage. At the rear there is a white inscription with the following words: MECHANIK BÜROMASCHINEN WERK WANDERER CONTINENTAL CHEMINTZ. There is also a logo with the initials VEB.The typewriters keyboard is well preserved, being composed of round keys reinforced and embellish by the classical nickel ring. The keys have black background and letters, signs and numbers in white, except for the shift keys that are turquoise green. It is a German keyboard and some letters have umlauts. The cover that stands just over the keyboard and bears the word CONTINENTAL can be removed in order to let us see the key levers. This lovely vintage typewriter will surely be the perfect piece to decorate a really stylish study or office.
