This great wooden wall clock is an antique and stately piece, a very elegant model created by the clockmaker Gustav Becker in the late 19th century (circa 1890). The clock is a Vienna-style model, the first model manufactured by the maker. It is in amazing condition and has been professionally restored to the last detail. For this reason, the wooden case looks wonderful and stands out thanks to the delicate French-polish finis that protects and decorates it. The movement has also been cleaned and adjusted in order to guarantee an impeccable operation: the clock chimes the hours and the halves accurately and with a lovely sound. The clocks box is made of solid walnut wood, boasting a sober design and with hand-carved ornamental details that increase its attractive. It has two side columns that flank the glass door through which we can see the brass pendulum and weighs. It is crowned by a carved and turned set composed of fine pieces whose style matches the ones at the lower side of the clock. The face is white, with the secondary hand typical of Vienna-style clocks and black Roman numbers. The lovely black filigree hands complete the elegant look of this piece. The movement is signed by Gustav Becker and bears the gold medal mark and the serial number 114109 engraved in the metal. For its elegance and great working order, this stunning wall clock deserves to belong to a good clover of classy clocks. Measurements: Width: 16 in / 42 cm. Height: 49.6 in / 126 cm.History of Gustav Becker Gustav Becker started his clockmaking career as an apprentice with different renowned clockmakers all around Germany. During the time he spent in Vienna he decided to create his own factory, which he did in Friburg in 1847. His stay in the Austrian capital city is the reason why many of his clocks are Vienna-style models; these clocks were the first ones to be produced in his workshop. In 1852 the business took off after being awarded the Design Gold Medal in the Silesia Trade Exhibition. From then on, Becker included the medal and the initials GB in his mark. In 1860 he started creating the Classic Gustav Becker clocks, complex and decorative high-quality models. In 1875 the sales reached a peak with more than 300,000 orders. In the 1880s, the Black Forest clockmakers started making quality and cheaper clocks so Becker had to return to making simpler and less expensive clocks.
